For Immediate Release
GLENDALE, Ariz. (Sept. 14, 2020) — Residents at the Glencroft Center for Modern Aging are going back to school Wednesday, Sept. 16. For some, it’s a chance to learn something new. For others, it’s an itch they’ve wanted to scratch their entire lives.
Glencroft University is a big reason visitors notice a “college vibe” on campus at this 40-acre continuing care retirement community. Residents can start their day with a swim or a workout in the performance center, grab a protein drink, and head to class without ever leaving Glencroft. Everything but the smoothie is part of the package at this “ZoeLife community.”
Steve Heller, vice president and director of ZoeLife operations, is also the Glencroft University chancellor. “Residents have roughly 40 classes to choose from during our semesters,” explained Heller. “For some who never had a chance to go to college, this is a chance to check it off of their bucket list. Others attend classes now and then. Regardless of their personal goals, the option to attend is provided at no additional cost and we plan to keep it that way.”
Course topics support Glencroft’s holistic ZoeLife model, founded on six core pillars of wellbeing: spiritual, physical, social, emotional, intellectual, and vocational. Students may elect such topics as religious studies, dementia or fall prevention, nutrition, conflict management, estate planning, navigating Medicare, coping with grief and depression, yoga, avoiding scams, and more. Various industry experts donate time and expertise to serve as guest instructors.
Students who complete a required number of courses under each pillar earn their degree as graduates of Glencroft University. Glencroft adheres to strict CDC safety and social distancing standards and offers streaming video and phone-in for those unable to attend in person.
